Albemarle County provides, at no charge, group life insurance to both full-time employees and those part-time employees that are eligible for benefits. Both group life insurance plans pay double your annual salary for natural death and quadruple for accidental death. Supplemental insurance is available at individual expense at a low group rate.
Full-time employees are covered through Minnesota Life/VRS and part-time employees are covered through MetLife. Benefits-eligible employees must designate beneficiaries. Full-time employees may elect payments to made in the order of precedence as established by law. The order of precedence established by law is:
If no surviving spouse, to your children and descendents of deceased children;
If none of the above, to your parents equally or to the surviving parent;
If none of the above, to the duly appointed executor or administrator of your estate;
If none of the above, to other next of kin entitled under the law of the state you live in at the time of death.
Please note that only blood-related and legally adopted children are recognized when electing to follow the precedence established by law. If your situation includes individuals not legally related to you, you should elect to designate each individual separately on the form. Part-time employees must separately designate beneficiaries. You may change your beneficiary election at any time.
