Leave

Albemarle County offers various types of paid leave to eligible employees:

HolidaysSick LeaveAnnual Leave, Sick Bank, Family Medical Leave, Military Leave

 

Holidays (12-Month Employees Only)

All 12-month regular employees get 12 paid holidays each fiscal year.  Additional holidays may be added at the discretion of the Boards.

2016-2017 Schedule

School Employees:  July 4, September 5, November 23 (close @ Noon), November 24, November 25, Decem

ber 23, December 26, December 27, December 28, December 29, December 30, January 16, May 29

Local Government Employees:  July 4, September 5, November 11, November 23 (close @ Noon), November 24, November 25, December 23, December 26, January 2, January 16, February 20, April 13, May 29

Sick Leave

  • Employees earn one (1) day per month.
  • Teachers may have their sick leave transferred into the County from other public school systems inside Virginia.  Transfer must occur within six months of hire.  Please consult the leave policy for transfer guidelines.

Annual Leave (12-Month Employees Only)

Employees earn at the following rates:
  • 1 day per month for each month employed during the first five (5) years of continuous employment.
  • 1 1/4 days for each month employed during the sixth through the tenth (6-10) years of continuous employment.
  • 1 1/2 days for each month employed during the eleventh through the fifteenth (11-15) years of continuous employment.
  • 1 3/4 days for each month employed during the sixteenth through the twentieth (16-20) years of continuous employment.
  • 2 days for each month employed during the twenty-first through twenty-fifth (21-25) years of continuous employment.
  • 2 1/4 days for each month employed during the twenty-sixth (26th) and succeeding years of continuous employment.

Sick Bank

The Sick Leave Bank offers up to 45 days paid leave to eligible members and is designed to help an employee through an extended illness when he or she has no remaining sick leave balance.  The employee must meet the first 20 days of their illness with whatever leave they have available (sick, annual, unpaid) and exhaust all of their available sick leave before having access to the Bank.
 
Employees may enroll in the Sick Bank within 30 days of their hire or during Open Enrollment.  Current employees who enroll during the open enrollment period must also submit medical documentation of their current state of health.

Family Medical Leave

  • Family Medical Leave (FML) provides up to 12 weeks of paid and/or unpaid job protected leave to eligible employees for the following reasons:
    • For incapacity due to pregnancy, prenatal medical care or child birth
    • To care for the employee's spouse, child or parent who has a serious health condition
    • For a serious health condition that makes the employee unable to perform the employees job
    • For employees who have a spouse, child, or parent on active duty or called to active duty for certain qualifying exigencies
    • For employees to care for a covered service member for a serious injury or illness (up to 26 weeks of leave)

Military Leave

To use the Military Leave benefit, you must present your orders to your department and code this leave as Military Leave for up to 15 days per federal fiscal year.  For more than 15 days, a leave earnings statement is required.  Please contact HR for specific questions.
